Are you hooked to facebook?

Social networking has engulfed the face of the earth and broken the communication barrier, the internet has set the pace for people to stay connected, and facebook is just a big and popular website, coming on scene at the right time and in the right place. Websites come and go, they make people rich, they influence governments and leaders to change things, they flourish. It's the trend.

Today we have been constantly warned about "getting hooked" to the internet and getting ourselves hooked to facebook. This is simply saying that the hazard is there if you are not making best use of your time. There is really nothing to fear because humans evolve to change and at some point we have to go with the process of change.

So, be it bad or good, we are all experiencing change in the way we interact and communicate, the internet is a great tool we must always cherish, it has spun us to a new beginning in the way we manage ourselves.I will not go with negativity as far as getting hooked to facebook goes. It is a new way of life we have to live with, learning to adjust ourselves is and will be a great challenge. That's evolution.

And most importantly, it's freedom to your mind, you are free to express. It's not a war after all, just expressions you post on facebook, ideally to be shared. Thank you.

A Peep at my Own Backyard

Malaysia is a land of beauty, its culture is so diverse that the Government has no choice but to allow for the major festivities to be declared "public holidays" so that its people comprising the ruling Malays, Chinese, Indians, and an array of ethnic minorities that make up the population can celebrate such occasions with the traditional Malaysian styled "open" houses. This is when you can visit one another to say hello as a gesture of goodwill to mark the festival. Each and every celebration has with it a unique festive style, the Malays the Aidil Fitri, the Chinese their New Year, the Indians their Hindu festivals , the Dayaks in Sarawak their Gawai or harvest festival and the list for joy and merriment goes on and on if one takes into account all the minority groups in Sarawak and Sabah.

The above is well and good, harmonizing relationships during festivities is an excellent way to promote goodwill and mend bad relationships among family members as well as friends. Foes too can forget and forgive during such a time, if they so wish.

But what is not bright in the horizon is Malaysia's failure to address "civil liberties" in its entirety. Malaysians especially the Chinese and Indians are looking for equal opportunities in both the economic and social sectors, they want rights to ownership of land and more opportunities for higher education at tertiary level. Not until such issues are addressed in no uncertain terms, dissatisfaction and the call for equality will continue.

The present Government under the leadership of Najib Tun Razak and controlled by UMNO, a Malay based party has brought its partners in the coalition known as the Barisan Nasional to the forefront of politics in Malaysia but it is not without its own problems especially on the question of integrity of its leaders. Corruption has been a a hot issue and still will be.

The birth of a 2 party system is in the offing in this beautiful land. The opposition pact headed by the vibrantly composed Anwar Ibrahim is calling for change in almost all areas of the economy. They too are not free from their own internal squabbles and perhaps their popularity and acceptance by the people will soon be gauged during the 13th General Election which many quarters have predicted will be held in the 1st half of this year.

The opposition leader Anwar has recently been acquitted of a sodomy charge by Malaysia's High Court and that is in itself a big boost as far as his morale goes. As it is now, he's all geared up for the Elections and may "dethrone" Najib. But he cannot do that without the support of the majority of Malaysians.

BERSIH Cleaning Up Malaysia

Malaysia has been gripped by the colour Yellow over the past month, this royal colour of the King is somewhat ridiculed when the organizers of the BERSIH rally calling for a free and fair Elections opted YELLOW as a symbol for their cause. The direct translation of the Malay word BERSIH in English is "clean". It's perplexing how clean do the Organizers of BERSIH want future Elections to be. The present Government under the strong grip of the UMNO Party led by Prime Minister Najib has declared BERSIH as illegal, one reason is that BERSIH has been said to have been sabotaged by the Opposition groups headed by Anwar Ibrahim, a man very much disliked by many in the UMNO Party.

YELLOW has therefore been splashing in most websites, even fb has been swarmed with yellow captions by Malaysians who think that change should be made first by being clean. Clean in this context covers the whole arena of corruption, mismanagement, nepotism etc etc etc of the present government. But is the BN Government that "dirty" to deserve such whipping? That is left to be seen in the Elections due in 2 years time. Like in any democracy, the people will decide for better or for worst.

In the state of Sarawak where the Ibans and Chinese form the majority and where the recently concluded State Elections gave BN (Barisan Nasional Party) another 5 year term in office, matters are quite under control. Or is it? The Police is vigilant in keeping an eye on the opposition groups who are now trying hard to convince the people that BERSIH's cause is a step in the right direction. How well will they succeed? Let's observe.

"The OBAMA SYNDROME"

"The Obama Syndrome" - wow! what is this? I would define it as an impetus for CHANGE, a CHANGE invented by Barrack Obama. I have called it The Obama Syndrome.

I am a lecturer living in Malaysia. I wish also to introduce another terminology which I called “The Protest Syndrome”. Seen and taken in both context, the 2 syndromes have prompted people in the Middle East to energize a power so great that they are willing to come to the streets to die to shake up their corrupt Governments and leaders.

The Obama Syndrome has brought with it a message to autocratic rulers the world over that real power is still in the hands of the people and not them.

I watched CNN and BBC almost every other hour when I have the time and goes roaming into the world of cyber space whenever there is time. The world today is small, just a click will tell you who’s right and who’s wrong and what’s going on. This in itself is CHANGE. Even classified state secrets have been revealed, Wikileaks has proven this.

The recent upheavals in Tunisia and Egypt calling for CHANGE have made me to coin this thing I called “The Obama Syndrome”. It stems from the word CHANGE which he advocated. Barrack was the guy, now President of the world’s greatest country who polarizes this word “CHANGE” with democracy. He won his Presidency banking on it.

The United States, a free country where its Government is for the people and with the people, a state where democracy is the cornerstone of the system, gave a new meaning to people all over the world that CHANGE can bring with it new hopes and new beginnings.

Of course this syndrome for change picked up pace and now seems to be the crystal ball of all the Middle Eastern countries. From Tunisia to Egypt and Libya, mayhem has broken out due to the want of CHANGE. All have echoed for CHANGE and it still goes on at this very moment.

Today, I understand that it has spread to some women’s groups in India. They too want CHANGE due to the rising food prices in the continent.

But admittedly by all practical norms, CHANGE cannot be brought about overnight. It must first be made known by the people through some kind of protest, be it mild, drastic or otherwise. This protest for CHANGE can by itself develop into a syndrome, evidenced by the current happenings in the Middle East. I have called it "The Protest Syndrome".

A Man Disgraced

Egypt, a close ally of the US had a shock awakening when young minds rallied the call for their President, Hosni Mubarak to step down. People took to the streets, overcame police brutality and turned their Liberation Square into a makeshift campsite, it still goes on and the worst may yet to come.

After 30 years, their military styled President Mubarak was cornered, scorned and could be lynched if he was to appear at the Square but of course, he didn’t. He just fell out of favour, degraded as a man and blamed for all the unemployment and hardship that many Egyptians went through for the past 30 years.

The man who is a military veteran had lived and played by tactical games to rule and stay in power is eventually tested by his own citizens. Frustration however was shown by him when he admitted that he’s fed-up with his leadership role. Ironically he’s still holding on to power.

Mubarak is actually buying time for him to shuffle his cards although he knows that his aces are all gone. It would be interesting to watch what the man will do next amidst all the calls from world leaders for him to initiate democratic reforms immediately. Not until he does that, the so called pro democracy protesters have indicated that they will stay on at the Square.

As one journalist puts it, he is “a dead man walking”. Wow!

My Thoughts on RELIGION

Why? Can't we talk about it? Of course we can. People make us not to. How silly? But let's not argue, that would be foolish.

If you argue about religion, it will bring anger and perhaps endless quarrels as to what and who is right and wrong. Religion has obviously made we humans more aligned with modern living. It is alive and well. If it is not, then we have only ourselves to blame. Unless we opt to be atheists, we fear God and things we consider as GODs. Humans came as creatures to this planet Earth, the process of evolution has relentlessly changed us Homo Sapiens into “high breed” beings where thoughts and morals control our living today. We have changed from the killing animals we once were, hunting for food to survive, to the most mannered animals we now are. But we still kill, domesticate animals, slaughter them and eat them. We called ourselves civilized. And ironically, we also use religion to slaughter them and we say it is acceptable.

So what has religion got to do with life and how we think? Is it a guide, some kind of a rule, an unseen order that we ought to follow because some great men made it as such, Jesus, Mohammad, Buddha. "Who is Jesus?", some have asked, “Is he God?” Now, let that be answered by God himself. I am in no position to say he’s not for I am a Christian and I honour every religion on the face of this Earth. Neither do I want to ask why a Muslim can marry 4 wives. That’s their religion, their teaching be it right or wrong, and it would be foolish and a waste of time to argue on such topics. That brings us to the fact that religion is indeed a guiding star in our lives. We see it, watch it, learn about it, cherish it, quarrel over it and treasure it. It guides us on, forever twinkling.

Michael York of Bath Spa University College, Bath, UK defines religion as:
"A shared positing of the identity of and relationship between the world, humanity and the supernatural in terms of meaning assignment, value allocation and validation enactment. A religion need not accept or believe in the supernatural, but it takes a position on. Likewise, some religions deny the reality or at least value of the world, but they still take a position."

Another says "The word 'religion' comes from the same root as the word 'ligament.' Ligaments connect muscles to bones. So the root word means, 'to connect, to bind, to tie together.' "Religion' literally means, 'continuously tying it all together.' Is it not therefore, an obvious deduction that that which is supposed to help us tie it all together should not be used to tear us apart?"

So don’t quarrel over it. It’s stupid of you to. In the worst case scenario, we all have to tolerate one another and understanding can help us tolerate.

No Harm Done to Talk Politics A Little

Wow, it's great to be back after a long spell!

That's the problem with us, human beings, we can forget things and we come up with all kinds of excuses when things don't turn out to be what we have wished for. Sometimes we cursed, although not intentionally, it is bad. In my case, I will not make any excuses. I just wanted a break and I had it. So I am back.

Our mind is a powerful machine that can turn the world upside down, not physically but in the abstract, if we want it to.We are builders, creators, destroyers of our own.

I have been watching the political scenario developing in Malaysia over the past couple of months and interestingly enough, our PM has indeed been trying his utmost to win the hearts of the rakyat. It also tells me that things are not alright in Malaysia when he started to cross swords with the opposition in the socioeconomic arena besides the normal political gambit. The Budget he announced lately was mildly acceptable by the majority but I thought the 500 ringgit as bonus for civil servants is not helping many "fence sitters" in the civil service who were expecting for more. Poor guys! Oh sure, we do get them, the "fence sitters" in the civil service. Many are sitting there quietly but supporting the PR groups. I have a few friends who are, certainly. Well, that's their choice which is democracy working.

Elections in Sarawak will soon be called and it seems we shall be seeing many "old" faces, tough incumbents facing not a plastic wall this time around but a brick wall being put up by DAP, PKR, PAS and their supporters. They are by far way ahead when it comes to internet strategy based on my personal opinion. Let's see how well our BN friends will climb and overcome the brick wall. Just don't fall!

I am incidentally from SPDP or the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party and the candidates from Miri belonging to the Sarawak United Peoples Party who know me will need my support and the Party's support. As SPDP is very much part of BN unless Datuk Seri William Mawan thinks otherwise, any BN candidates in the 3 Miri State constituencies will be supported by us in SPDP. That's a fair deal.

Politics is politics, sometimes you have to play it by the ear. wow!

Sarawak the Land of Rivers

The longest river in Sarawak is the Rejang river with the bustling Sibu town as its stopover. The widest in Sarawak is the Baram and it has Miri city to boast of its nice beaches. The state capital of Kuching has the Sarawak river where many sea battles were fought during the rule of the white "rajahs" and the Skrang has many tales to tell too in Sri Aman.

To any Sarawakians who say they hate Sarawak, I would say you are nuts! What a shame not to love one's home? What a shame not to appreciate the many rivers that nature has given us?

Sarawak is a beautiful land of rivers, abundant with Culture, nice untapped beaches and friendly people. Set aside politics, it is a place you can relax and called home. This is where I live, the city of Miri. The pace of life here is slow if compared to other Asian cities. It’s peaceful here, no hassle going to window shop or eat one’s favourite food at anytime of day. Bank robberies are unheard of here, although once in a while you get petty thieves disturbing the serenity of the place.

Miri deservedly got its "city" status 5 years ago in May 2005 and ever since, it has enjoyed what we Mirians called the Mayfest celebration. That's when colourful events are held throughout the month specially for its residents to enjoy in a spirit of brotherhood.

When Love is Found

Today's world is full of hypocrisy and hatred that Love seems to be a thing of the past. If it is shunned by those who only live by the bullet, surely it is alive and well for Christians the world over because Love is the cornerstone of the religion we called CHRISTIANITY.

Love transcends words, the abstract will be told when two human beings fall in love. A loving couple will do just about anything for each other to create its beauty. When that happens, they are very much in love. It is bliss.

Love is the maker of life, the central pillar of our existence taught to us by Jesus. When it is honoured, cherished, practiced and remembered, it gives us solace and peace. Even without freedom, love exists, its tremendous power is beyond imagination.

And to cherish this word, I have here a short poem about Love. I wrote it about a year ago and it's here for you.

The night comes, the sun sleeps
The owls rose, the bats fly
Watch, the moon passes by
Just thoughts no words from the lips
True, it comes not once, you sigh
That feeling of love, we know not why
As memories unfold like stars in the sky
We pause, we thought
If sadness brings pain, love gives sense.

Make the Best of Life

Life is full of ups and downs which are only normal. Maslow’s theory of needs is great thoughts to align life to existence. Our existence is molded by us ourselves. It is also controlled by nature.

The important thing is for us to be appreciative of life itself, our purpose here on this planet. Are we here to create problems for mankind? Are we here to enjoy all things in their material form? Are we here because God has made us to be so? Or are we here to make the best of life albeit all the problems we have, to use what nature has to offer us?

Certainly today we have to live with whatever systems of government imposed on us and manage the tolerance from within us to what is happening around us, be it bad or good. We can avoid being participants to the system if so we choose or we can make life miserable by going against it. But life goes on and because we opt to be what we are, we must live life to the best we can. That “best” of course can either be morally right or wrong.

When we are appreciative of the things around us especially nature, we tend to find that there is a purpose in life. If we find solace in religion, in medicine, in science, we must not forget too, that wisdom is the key within us to make life more meaningful.

A Look at ANGER

Anger is about us and our state of mind. It is an emotion we show to others that can destroy our good image and damage relationships. It is a reaction coming from within us as a result of some displeasure over something we take as negative. We express it in many forms like shouting at the top of our voice, displaying unruly finger signs, staring and other offending postures to show aggression.

Animals show their anger when trying to secure mating privileges, this is most common. And of course, to protect their territorial boundaries, animals may even fight to the death. Humans do this too whenever someone encroaches their territory. This is protectionism, an innate trait of all humans. The Israeli-Palestinian war has stemmed out of territorial boundaries. Both sides are forever quarreling out of anger for one another.

I believe that Anger is part of the evolution process, being that functional part of us to continue with survival as a species. Today we have all kinds of threats from many quarters of the globe. If global warming makes mankind angry with their own species, the deprived poor can be notably angry with the rich around them when wealth is not seen to be equitably shared.

Anger is a driver of many things we do everyday, sometimes we are stressed by anger itself for no apparent reason. Rightly too we sometimes describe anger as stress. This seems to be the more meaningful word if anger sounds inappropriate.

It is when we are angry or always angry that we are most vulnerable to the elements from within our own system. What we get and experience are discomfort, pain and injury. We may grief and withdraw ourselves, even resorting to drugs, alcohol, tobacco smoking and other forms of pain killers which will give us temporary relief but not a cure.

The cure ironically is found in the brain, we commonly described it as our mind, our engine of thoughts. The body is just a vehicle, the fuel for our cells to function efficiently is in the hypothalamus where the “pineal” and the “pituitary” glands secrete hormones and act as masters to all other body systems we have.

The Forefinger for 1

Playing with our fingers can turn out embarrassing especially when we fiddle with our forefinger. We have dressed up our fingers in up teem ways. We ringed our fingers, painted them, tattooed them, and of course abused them in whatever way we want. In some culture, pointing the most dexterous finger which is the index finger or forefinger at someone is considered rude whilst showing your middle finger is absolutely unnecessary unless provoked. The thumbs up are a sign of “OK” while upside down, it denotes “not OK”. But the famous of them all is the “V” sign for peace, accepted universally by many people around the globe.

What is now turning to be interesting for Malaysians is the 1 sign using the forefinger or index finger to depict 1Malaysia. This is only so when you hold it steadily, otherwise wagging it may be construed as an admonitory gesture. Worst still, when you show up the middle finger for 1Malaysia, either accidentally or through sheer ignorance, it will be painful to the eyes. Wow, don't do it!

Malaysian Political Bickerings

Quarrels play on the headlines of politics in Malaysia over the past months. In Sarawak, we have a share of the storms created by party leaders from within, the President slandered. Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party's (SPDP) problems are far from over, it is still brewing hot. Over in Peninsular Malaysia, the MCA as the spokesman for the Chinese in BN are feverishly looking at the next echelon of leaders. They are bracing for fresh polls.

What is sad to hear and watch are the mud slinging battles that come on media. They can appear in unruly comments, proverbs and all that one can think of in the dictionary of politics. With plenty to read in the morning, it makes coffee breaks interesting.

Throwing mud at somebody’s face, whether he’s a minister or the ordinary ice-cream man is low and ungentlemanly. When it happens, hate is the word. Hate propels us to humiliate the person we dislike in order to break his ego and honour. Politicians do this very often, Sarawak is not an exception, we learn quickly.

If Hate destroys, Love builds. But both Love and Hate are 2 sides of the same coin. Both can be temporary, permanent or authentic. Hence, we can be enemies today and friends tomorrow and vice versa. But when hate is authentic, we cannot be friends. Likewise in religion, we can pray everyday and still be a hypocrite. The praying is permanent but not authentic.

Politically in Malaysia, I am of the opinion that UMNO and PAS are authentic foes and can never come together. I see this as the cue to future politics of our nation, the 2 fronts are already appearing with the PKR leading the opposition and UMNO anchoring the BN government of the day.

Politicians must now sort themselves out. If the Americans have the Democrats and Republicans well rooted in, we are just starting the political music on the same note in Malaysia.

Canning - What is so Alarming ?

I've been caned in my life while i was in an aided school many many years ago, in the 1960's. I was caned on the palms of both hands just to get the 50% marks required for a pass in my Nature Study. The teacher was a Malay muslim who was at that time unpopular because he liked to cane those who failed to pass them, perhaps as a way to get us students to study so that we pass. I failed so I got caned by someone who liked canning students. Simple.

Recently, the canning of 3 muslim women in KL who were involved in illicit sex alarmed human rights groups in Malaysia and around the world. That did not paint a good picture of our country. Some called it a "cruel and degrading punishment" which I think is just a matter of opinion. If they have broken the Shariah laws, so be it, they must face the consequences. The irony is, the flesh trade or prostitution is rampant in Malaysia, muslim women are not excluded from this oldest trade known to mankind. You can go down to Limbang in Sarawak or just roam KL at anytime of the day to witness such brothels and massage parlors carry out their businesses quite openly under the noses of the authorities. Patronizing such places are Malaysians plus foreigners and muslim men too, let's be clear about that.

If canning is a deterrent, let it be done in a regulated manner. We have our Shariah laws, we must respect that. I am a Christian, I am not a lawyer, I will not go against it. If you asked me whether there is pain when you are caned, i would positively say yes, it could cut through your flesh, we must not deny the fact that there will not be pain. Come on, this is punishment!

Opinions matter a lot

People are born to form opinions. Opinions come from the mind and controlled by our thoughts which are influenced by perception, that of what we see and hear, and what we take as being acceptable or unacceptable. Acceptability in itself is an opinion created in the mind. We all do that everyday and it can be good or bad, weak or strong, we either accept things or reject them. We said we choose. It’s a matter of opinion.

Many may argue that opinions are neither good nor bad as bad opinions may be accepted by those bad in thoughts including groups, communities and society. To these people, good opinions are bad and vice versa. But of course, the rule of thumb is that a bad opinion is not normally accepted by the majority, but instead we can be scorned for it, more so with leaders who make bad decisions out of misinformation on opinions made by others or having been ill informed of a subject matter. Win or lose is therefore a matter of making the right decisions based on opinions. You win because you have been accepted.

Our opinions can be biased when we take sides, sometimes unintentionally. When we are conscious of making a strong opinion, we shall defend our opinion and stand our grounds. We say we have principles. When we are not conscious of our state of mind in deriving at a decision, things can turn sour. We say that’s a bad decision. Opinions made hastily are normally not well thought out, thus rebuttal of opinions of this nature will invite repercussions and arguments beyond imagination. People disagree because of such opinions that are unacceptable, seen on the outside as decisions made without much thought or due consideration.

People making strong opinions may not necessarily allow for a good decision, they could be bad and damaging, even misleading. However, opinions based on the principles of good can materialize in many things good. Morality in behavior is one of them. But there again, what is good to you may be bad to me. Even in religion, good or bad is a matter of opinion. So, it’s back to the mind and arriving at an opinion, our thoughts managing the opinions we make.

The foundation of a good opinion lies in the person, who he is what he is. When a person makes an opinion, it would normally be based on certain aspects of life which have been influencing him or her. As life is shaped by our belief and faith, these form the basis of all opinions. Of course, our upbringing, our culture and our education play a part as well in any judgment that leads us to form our opinions. The key to a good decision is in the mind, our engine of thoughts mold our behavior, our belief, our faith, our opinion.

Certainly opinions matter a lot and very much so.

All Hell is Breaking Lose

It really broke the silence in many ways because FIRE CRACKERS are banned in Malaysia. While I am writing now, the thunderous sound of the crackers are awakening babies in their cots in Miri, it's Chinese New Year of course, many would say it's OK for the crackers to be fired on this particular night. Perhaps it's OK if it's not banned, therefore, it's not OK.

My mum is Chinese and I remember in those days in Miri when it was OK to fire those crackers during CNY, we had one hell of a good time firing them especially when it was about to strike midnight. But times have changed. We now have a law, not only on the firing but the importation of the stuff. Obviously, tonight the law has been broken in Miri by the Chinese community at large, you only need to be here to believe me. It's OK as one of my friends, a Police Officer puts it, only for tonight. How puzzling it is and surely, it would not be wrong to say that such a ban is somewhat "a blessing in disguise" for those assigned to see its enforcement. Corruption or whatever, the question is, "How did they get in?".

These "explosives" are being sold quite rampantly in Miri in the "black market" and indeed, if they could be smuggled into Miri and be purchased here, it means that the whole of Sarawak could have them, all at a price of course. Probably the thunderous sounds are well ushered in too in Sibu, Kuching, Kapit, Limbang and the rest of the State. Well you can say, it's Chinese New Year, let them have the fun.

Certainly with the law, I would say ALL HELL IS BREAKING LOSE on this Chinese New Year's night. Kong Hee Fatt Choi from me.

The Saiful vs Anwar Movie

It’s like a James Bond movie with most Malaysians watching closely the Saiful vs Anwar Ibrahim saga, the courthouse you can be sure is packed, I am miles away in Miri, Sarawak, I couldn’t be there. But with the internet, you don't really need to be there to know what is happening.

The politician in Anwar is obvious with his followers calling for reforms while the man plays the hero’s role even in the courts. Of course, he is innocent until proven guilty, that’s the law. The young guy Saiful is all groomed and getting just as much attention from the media as the man he either once “idolized” or “hated”. There are 2 versions really to this part of the story.

Many bloggers have called him names and he’s not at all liked by members of the opposition. He has been degraded by some to dirt but don't you think he has made a name for himself, even the kampong lady knows who's Saiful whom some called the "stupid arsehole". Well, Sodomy is the cause of it all, the dirty "controversial" word which is morally wrong in all its right meaning, something absolutely unacceptable to Muslims, Christians and Buddhists alike.

It would be interesting time for all Malaysians to watch how the court will proceed with the case. The Judicial system in Malaysia is certainly going through an acid test. Leaders carry with them responsibilities and with that, they are sometimes compelled to make decisions which could turn out to be good, bad or even wrong. Many too would take responsibilities on themselves without realizing the consequences of their actions. Forgetfulness cannot be blamed if one fails to remember. It's normal to forget. But it's not normal for us to forget important events like birthdays of family members and when we left college. Here's something I wrote last year which I almost forgot.

What books did to the minds, the internet has taken its place to infiltrate your thoughts. Chairman Mao Tse Tung wrote his thoughts in a book that materialized in modern China today. The book is forgotten, the internet creeps in. Bill Gates turned the internet around so fast that information can now be retrieved with a click. The whole world went crazy, a phenomenal effect! It has indeed changed people and the way they think. How blessed we are and how disastrous too to mankind. Osama bin Laden uses the internet when trying to match the power and might of the Americans. It produced a lethal effect in the 9/11 attack.

Today, no government can function smoothly without the communicative prowess of the internet. If the North Korean regime keeps it away from their people making the whole world laugh in disgust, it would not take long for the internet to break the iron curtain.

Ironically, we now got such stuff as internet sex, internet wedding, internet medicine, you name it, you have it! Even smell is dished out through internet..what a wonder in the atoms? It is dictating the way people think the world over. Its power is enormous, we are made of it, trillions...wow, read my thoughts!

I went back with my thoughts and knew this would be interesting stuff. The ATOMS, what rubbish to say that they could be internet savvy, but we really don't know, do we?

My thoughts about the EGO

Are we not just as egoistic ourselves when we called others "egoists"? Of course, that includes me, I am not running from this fact that I am not one. We all are, in one way or another.

The EGO is a false center, it is plastic. Everyone is an egoist although not born with it but into it. The EGO is the abstract part of us acquired from the moment we realize that existence is about fear and survival. Children learn about fear and survival once they are in kindergartens.

All of us have 2 common centers but only a handful would have the 3rd center, let’s called it center numbers 1, 2 and 3, the 1 is you with society and the fear that you will not be accepted by others, and the 2 is how you want to be regardless of what society thinks of you. In both centers 1 and 2, you are carrying some fear, the fear of what society may take you to be and the fear of self and failure to self. Most of us exist in these 2 orders or centers, you with society looking for acceptance and you against society. Only a few will achieve the 3rd order, a nameless center, which is you with your conscience, your soul, the truth, you and God.

If you have other views, that's fine with me..why not? The beauty of having egos are they spur you on, they motivate you, they make you want to create, to develop to make your dreams come true. The bad thing is you may hurt others with it.

Busy...that's the word from me

Busy...that's the word, busy, I have been kept busy by lecturing, holidaying and meekly, politics. I owed my self an apology and I felt refreshed again being able to find time to update my blog tonight.

The current political squabble in the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) of which I am a Divisional Chairman in the state constituency of SENADIN, Miri is worrisome for many in the party. It's an unhealthy development, a disadvantage for the BN in Sarawak and surely not helping the 1Malaysia many of us are trying to foster. With all due respect to them, our state leaders from within the fold should realize that no amount of public outcry of who's right or who's wrong could mend the rift that has already surfaced over just a matter of a week. Damage has been done and it will take time for it to be mended and rebuilt.

Of course, political foes fighting from within is not at all new and unheard of. This is politics, a right wing and a left wing is common. MCA has its share of such conflicts and certainly UMNO has some good history of infighting too when Tengku Razaliegh failed in his bid to take over the party.

The next few weeks will be an interesting time. The wisdom of the President Datuk Mawan must not be underrated. He will I am sure be able to calm the storm.

Sleeping well is getting up to a new day full of hope and challenge. What is worst then having a bad sleep, unwanted dreams and all the body aches that you experience in the morning, to cope with a busy schedule at work. Don't you think that it is you who actually created the unpleasantness to spoil your day.

Sleep debt or depriving oneself of sleep is rampant in today's metropolitan living, the stressors we experience everyday will add on to our tired mind making sleep even more difficult to cope with. I am certainly no expert to claim authority over sleep, only an understanding of its fine rudiments will make one to appreciate why sleeping well is so important to a healthy life.

Sleep is part of our circadian rhythm, it is controlled by the hormone melatonin produced by the Pineal gland in our brains plus all the established zeitgebers that relate to the rhythym . Sleeping well is about one adjusting and adapting to the "do's" and "don'ts" of everyday living. If you think coffee will disturb your sleeping patterns, I have many friends who will argue and say coffee help them in sleep. But yes, generally speaking any stimulants like coffee may hamper the sleep pattern of many individuals.

Sleeping also connects to our brain waves which account for the dreams many would experience in the REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement). Would you be sleeping well with REM Sleep? The answer lies with you.

A Heart Attack - what it is

There are still many people around who are unclear and confused of what a Heart Attack is. Sometimes called a Cardiac Arrest, I will now try to explain it briefly in my own words.

The Heart pumps blood. Like all organs in the human body, it requires a steady supply of oxygen to function efficiently. The muscles of the heart are constantly fed with a rich supply of blood via the coronary arteries. These arteries can get blocked when it is “starved” of oxygen. And the blockage is normally the build up plagues of different sizes. These plague deposits consisting of fatty matter, calcium, proteins and inflammatory cells are soft in the inside but hard on the outside, the shell. When these shells crack, which means the plague rupture, platelets in the blood are drawn to the area and blood clots are formed. The formation of such clots can block the arteries; subsequently oxygen is unable to reach the muscle tissues. The tissue cells die as a result, thus causing permanent damage. This is a HEART ATTACK.

Miri is where I live, only an hour's drive from this cosmopolitan city will bring you into the realities of what Malaysia has to offer, diverse traditions and cultures that make up this multi racial nation. Tourists from all over the world have visited Sarawak and they will always be shown or at least will be told of how the Dayaks live in the the interior of the state. If we live in concrete brick walls we called home, theirs are simple longhouses made of wood. The word longhouse has a special meaning to the Dayaks especially from an ethnic majority group, the Ibans. The Ibans are known for their culture of sharing in whatever they do, their culture and tradition goes back into history well before the era of the White Rajahs of Sarawak - the Brooke Dynasty and later the British Colonial Rule - a time when Sarawak was but a virgin jungle. Although today many Dayaks have migrated to the towns and cities to be in the mainstream of the economy, the majority still dwell in their longhouses as farmers. It was nostalgic when I penned my teenage days in Miri in the 60s. You can read that in my posting earlier. And it was bitter sweet to recall back the vivid moments of the time I spent in Secondary School. I reminisced the days at St.Columba, one of the 2 Mission schools then in Miri which gave me that solid foundry of my early education. Some sad moments too about Miri, the place of demise of my late mum and dad and some other dear family members. The place has brought me to be nearer God whom I would talked to everyday. For the moment, I will never bid it farewell for any other, it's my home.

Everyone makes mistakes at one point or the other in their lives. This is the inevitable, a fact. After all, like what is said, "TO ERR IS HUMAN". When we do make mistakes, we are concerned and sometimes worried of the wrong that we have done. We may feel sad, sometimes we regret. For many people, mistakes come and go, it’s a daily occurrence they couldn’t be bothered about especially when the mistakes are small ones. But when mistakes are big mistakes, people tend to be more conscious not to repeat their mistakes again.
Mistakes can come at any moment in our lives. Sometimes it just happened; sometimes it is through our very own carelessness. No matter what the mistake is, it is a mistake and we cannot let it occur again. This is the rule of thumb but how many of us take heed of our mistakes. For those who do, they are blessed for they are the ones who will progress faster in what they do.
Mistakes can be fatal too. In the workplace, a stupid mistake can cause a dear life to be lost. Injuries in the workplace where hazards are aplenty, mistakes are not uncommon. Workers learn not to make mistakes through proper training administered by their management.
At one point in my life many years ago, I was afraid of making mistakes. I didn't want to get into an embarrassment of apologizing for my mistakes. Then I began to realize that mistakes are an essential part of self improvement. From then on, it was no turning back. I took that opportunity upon myself to understand what is meant by apologizing with dignity for the mistakes I made and I also realized that it would be futile and a waste of time trying to justify mistakes. But most importantly, I found a way to avoid repeating mistakes. I told myself that we are all not perfectionists as human beings. I also told myself that acceptance of one’s mistakes is acknowledgment of one’s weakness from which a strength is gained. That realization of a strength gained is a catalyst to spur us on with doing things right. That as we all know is progress.

When I was a Teenager - the 60's

When I was a Teenager, life was beautiful. Although there were no newspapers, no tv, no internet, no kfc in the mid 60’s, it was fun. We had the radio and that was it. Music came from this bulky stuff with all its tubes and just one speaker and it was great entertainment.

I also remembered my iron horse, the bicycle. Cycling was a luxury, I had my bicycle, and it was branded Robin Hood. Many of my friends had their Raleigh which was a bit more expensive. At 40 Mdollars you could buy one. I cycled most of the time, couldn’t go far except to school and back, round the town and to the beach. Oh the beach was natural, surroundings were clean, Miri was a place of fresh air, people were simple, there was no karaoke but we had dancing parties in the club. There were 3 famous clubs in Miri, Gymkhana Club, Miri Recreation Club and Machinda Club (I guess it stood for Malays, Chinese, Dayak). Everyone knew everyone then. Friends were everywhere. I used to go and watch these adults doing their Waltzes, Tangos and Joget during the dance parties. The men's trousers were baggy and the ladies had make ups as thick as snow. Heheheh. The band was Jazz, a trumpet, a double bass, one guitar and the drummer. They played what we know now as the oldies. Anyone could go up to the mic and sing.

When I was thirsty, Kopi O was the drink. My mum would have that ready in a big pot, it was actually in a kettle. All we siblings would depend on this sweet Kopi O to quench our thirst. No packet drinks, no canned drinks, so you couldn't expect more. A piece of bread bun only costs 10 cents, there were no burgers to think of. Ice Kacang was 10 cents too. Kolok Mee 25 cents.

But the best part was still the radio. That was the wow then. It gave entertainment for everyone at night. There were not many channels to choose from, the famous was BBC (stands for Bristish Broadcasting Corporation). We couldn’t choose the channels at home because our Dad had monopoly of the big stuff everybody loved. He was our Guru in everything. He taught me play the guitar. In the following clip, I am bringing you back into my life with some radio music of the 60s.

Open Up and Understand via the Media

The BLACKBERRY is sold like hotcakes in the midst of fickle minds trying to block websites and ideas flowing. Come on...we should not be shutting off the media. We know that the freedom of speech must be understood by the layman in the context of the law, abuse of its freedom will also be subject to the law.

Regardless of what it is, the majority of journalists the world over are holding their grounds to unrestrained reporting. They know their limits, they have their ethics. Barring them from giving information is screwing up the very system that we should be building.

The question of religion has always been a sensitive issue which I think should be understood by all quarters and explored in depth by intellectuals the world over. We are not leaning to this, we say it is sensitive, hence we avoid discussing it openly. We also know that the media is a platform where this understanding can be shared, communicated and appreciated by everybody. In many countries, this has not been fully supported by the governments where the mainstream media are under their care and control. Vital information on religion is therefore not shared and dissipated in an organized way to everyone. That is to say something that we need to understand about each others religion are not getting through. All we get are sectoral teachings via our respective religion, in churches, synagogues, mosques and temples. We defend ourselves by saying that all religion teaches us good. While this is arguably true, we are not helping the situation to make religion a consensus for all, to be shared and understood.

When we open up with information, we learn. Holding it back can result in negativity and unprecedented backlash. To me, it is important that the Christians understand the goodness of the Islamic faith and the Muslims reciprocally are given the opportunity to understand Christianity. It applies with all other religions. This does NOT mean that one is trying to convert the other. No.

Is Morality eroding in our world today? Could we have it without God? Could religion poison one's mind? Watch the next clip...it's a Debate...watch the body language of all the 3 gentlemen, it tells you something...wow! wow!

Could we not live in PEACE?

We must go back into history to live in peace and harmony for a better tomorrow. Radicalism and religious extremism have no place in a peaceful world. History has the facts. If it had kept precise records of dictators like Hitler and what he did, it didn't tell you much about how the Spaniards trained their fierce dogs to attack, kill and tear the Indians to pieces in the spread of Christianity.
Mustering peace in any parts of the world requires tact and wisdom and I think the rule of thumb is in preserving harmony, garnering support for the harmony and planting it amongst people, communities and nations of the world. It would require us to honour, cherish and cultivate THREE important traits namely tolerance, respect and understanding. These are the seeds for us to sow, the catalysts to harmony. Only then could we have what we called Solidarity. Let's be clear on this.

The United Nations, in its overview stated that it is "...committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights...". This is easier said then done.

Being on this planet EARTH is similar to being on a jet plane going from one place to another. We are all transients sharing a flight, which is temporary. We may not have the best seats for the moment, but we will all soon be landing at our destination. So why should we engage in quarreling over temporary seats? Moreover, those who have the best seats--fancy houses and high paying jobs, the wealthy--will also have to give up their seats when the flight is over, at the time of death. And where they will go after that, no one can really know for sure. Therefore, those who understand the temporary nature of this world will stop fighting and help one another to get through this life on earth. We must henceforth be willing to encourage in all manner possible to strengthen, not threaten life.

Our prejudices can restrict our ability to progress individually and socially. Spiritual understanding and enlightenment, ultimately, is all that will allow us to grow beyond our prejudices and living in a world of distinctions, and bring us to a world of peace and unity.This is a realization of the humbleness within self and giving self the opportunity to co-exist.

Prejudice is more than a conflict with others, it is an internal fight, a negative activity within oneself. We carry it with us wherever we go, an equivalent to a sign of immaturity. It is natural that as people mature, and especially if they develop spiritually, they will get tired of this fight from within. Thus, this lack of maturity in their perception may wear them down and may stifle their ability to contribute to society and themselves. They withdraw from society, remain retarded in this sense and never reach their full potential. As we mature in life and develop spiritually, the fight over prejudicial distinctions becomes boring. For many, it is a waste of time and dangling beneath one's dignity.

Could we not rise above the dictates of the mind and senses and view the Divinity, the Supersoul or God, within everybody with Divine Love. If Real religion means developing the love of God and for God, the authenticity coming from within self and including all of the parts and parcels of God, all the spirit souls, we should find it easier to shed the differences between the names and forms of the Divine, and to work together for a universal acknowledgment of the ONE TRUE GOD.

Yesterday, thieves tried to enter my gym office by drilling through the key hole of the pad lock. Their noisy intrusion around 1.30 am awoke some occupants of the building on the 3rd floor who chased them down the staircase. I was told they came in a Kancil, Malaysia's smallest car.

Now, we can't do it by praying alone, that is known.

In the modern day even Preaching comes with style. Of course Biblical preaching goes back into history. It comes in a package complete with body language and a loud voice. The Preacher cannot be soft and weak because he is a leader, perhaps chosen by GOD to lead the congregation and in this case, the Church.

Apparently we all live in an age where people need the visual. The visual is not only on our televisions or on our laptops, but on the screen in front of us all day, be it at home, in the office or at the supermarket. Indeed, we are bombarded by the visual everywhere we look. That makes me to think that people need something visual during the sermon too....wow!...Certainly the impact of the communication matters and The Preacher knows it.

So, what is the big fuss all about? To those who are trying to kick up the dust, I must tell you that Malaysia is one of the most peaceful nations on Earth? Have you ever thought of that? You don't have to wander far with such thoughts. Think of Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Hong Kong, and our neighbour Indonesia, you will say NO, not these places. You can forget about Pakistan, India, China or where you can be shot at anytime, the US.

Yes, Singapore maybe nice but you have to make do with a gigantic forest of brick walls. Everything is solid and artificial. Head north to the very much Christian nation of the Phillipines, exotic nightlife can make you broke and the typhoon and volcanoes will make you shudder in your pants. And when you are left with neighbouring Brunei, you discover that you have no pubs to karaoke, alcohol consumption is also taboo. Alright, head for the Middle East, go and camp out in the desert, the blazing sun will thirst you out. That's when you come back to your senses and yearn for the place you can called home, your beautiful Malaysia.

The Black Eyed Peas (American Hip Hop group) concert is banned for muslims in Malaysia and is creating some controversy amongst muslims. It is sponsored by Guinness Anchor Berhad where some of its Board of Directors are muslims.

Unhappy, a blogger in Malaysia Today has this to say:

"If want to pass a bill/law it must be fair and square,this is why people find Islam in Malaysia funny.Cant go to a concert coz of sponsor but can be a board of director in a brewery.

There are a lot of Malays in business considered haram in Islam.
Use the top down approach don't use bottom up approach."

This blogger must be a muslim himself deprived of attending the concert.

N.B. The organisers today (Sept.1)reversed their earlier stand and said that Muslims are now permitted to attend a concert by US hip-hop band Black Eyed Peas.

Throwing mud at somebody’s face, whether he’s a minister or the ordinary ice-cream man is low and ungentlemanly. When it happens, hate is the word. Hate propels us to humiliate the person we dislike in order to break his ego and honour. Politicians do this very often.
Love and hate are 2 sides of the same coin. Both can be temporary, permanent or authentic. Hence, we can be enemies today and friends tomorrow and vice versa. But when hate is authentic, we cannot be friends. Likewise in religion, we can pray everyday and still be a hypocrite. The praying is permanent but not authentic.
Politically in Malaysia, UMNO and PAS are authentic foes and can never come together. This is the cue to future politics in Malaysia, the 2 fronts are already appearing. Politicians must now sort themselves out.
If the Americans have the Democrats and Republicans well rooted in, we are just starting the political music on the same note in Malaysia.

When rich well known politicians fight in the open, it's hard to control them. He bites him and he bites back! And bites will result in wounds!

Malaysia's Bintulu MP and Barisan Nasional's backbenchers Chairman, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing is involved in a tussle with the President of MCA, Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat over the RM10 million issue which Tiong said was given to Ong. Now Ong is suing Tiong for RM 500 million, a defamation suit and a hefty sum for anyone to imagine.

Politician businessman Tiong King Sing is not going to be a popular figure no more in Sarawak. The PKFZ issue under probe now by the Public Accounts Committee is a big headache he has to overcome.

This could be a nightmarish episode for both.

We should say NO to any forms of extremism in Malaysia regardless of what it is, be it politics, religion, education or economic reforms.
After watching a blog where the Minister of Information Rais Yatim was dubbed "The Chickenshit Minister of Misinformation", I felt disgusted at the way Malaysian bloggers are running down those in the government. Ministers do make mistakes and as human beings, some are apparently "sombong" (meaning "proud" in English) and display the air of arrogance to the media. Rais Yatim somehow showed his true colours to the press when questioned in English, he chided the news reporter for not using BM. As a blogger myself, I think Malaysian bloggers have already the freedom of expression in the internet which is fundamentally a place where views are exchanged and communicated.
If at all we are unhappy and displeased with those in the government or the government itself, by all means vote them out in the next general election. But to propagate the politics of hate on internet in our beautiful Malaysia is like smashing rotten eggs in our own backyard. And rotten eggs are smelly and pungent! Our words of hatred, unedited, could tantamount to treason.

Some very interesting news were unfolding in Malaysia lately. TV 3 carried all of them. From political comedians like PAS Spiritual Adviser talking about religious "palsus" ("palsu" literally means "false" or "pretender" in English) lurking in UMNO to pit bull politicians in Ong Tee Keat and Tiong King Sing, the internet is bustling with bloggers and Malaysians venting their anger at the BN government under PM Najib whom some called Najis. The Malaysia Today blog is like hot chili peppers, dirt are all over the place. That was where I read that you could be fined for coughing in public places in Malaysia. Gosh, I am flabbergasted, mystified and astounded.

H1N1 brings popularity to the surgical masks. Now the absurdity of making surgical masks a controlled item in Malaysia doesn't go well with many traders. While prices soar to US$1.00 per piece, the price hikes alarming many in the government, it must be noted that such masks can easily be made in backyards too which is of course downright unhealthy.
When even international passports can be forged, what is so difficult about making a few thousand pieces of surgical masks in the backyard everyday. Yeah, the black market creeps in when you tighten the noose.
I reckon everything must be subjected to the radar screen at such a time, unscrupulous traders, politicians cum businessmen, journalists, and even the wannabe backyard traders trying to make a quick buck cannot be spared...sometimes near foolish ideas given by politicians are accepted blindly or with one eye shut...wow!

Living in poverty is a nightmare for many the world over, from India to North Korea and our neighbouring Indonesia, the very poor merely exist, not living. In Malaysia, there are still people who are trying to make ends meet and struggling for a bowl of rice everyday. This fact must not be denied by any quarters. And we mustn't compare ourselves with populous nations like India and Indonesia. Whilst TV3 did their rounds to show help and care are rendered to the poor, others may just be left there to fend for themselves. Lest we forget the rich in Malaysia are well taken care of. Maslow's theory is practically forgotten by many in the administration who are resigned to their procedural box. Only Politics can change things around and politicians are key players to uplifting the mere existence of the poor. No, I am not talking of living standards here. The very poor have none of that.

Fear mongering is about making you shrink into your cocoons. The Inspector General of Police was dead serious about people spreading unfounded rumours. Rumours can create fear and havoc and sow the seeds of discord amongst people and communities. A young politician questioned by the authorities was found dead mysteriously. Sad and strange!
And just now I heard about this new political party they called PARTY CINTA MALAYSIA...to me in Sarawak it matters when things move so fast in KL. What books did to the minds, the internet has taken its place to infiltrate your thoughts. Chairman Mao Tse Tung wrote his thoughts in a book that materialized in modern China today. The book is forgotten, the internet creeps in. Bill Gates turned the internet around so fast that information can now be retrieved with a click. The whole world went crazy, a phenomenal effect! It has indeed changed people and the way they think. How blessed we are and how disastrous too to mankind. Osama bin Laden uses the internet when trying to match the power and might of the Americans. It produced a lethal effect in the 9/11 attack.
Today, no government can function smoothly without the communicative prowess of the internet. If the North Korean regime keeps it away from their people making the whole world laugh in disgust, it would not take long for the internet to break the iron curtain.
Ironically, we now got such stuff as internet sex, internet wedding, internet medicine, you name it, you have it! Even smell is dished out through internet..what a wonder in the atoms? Politicians who talk from both sides of their mouths lurk both in and out of the government. They are a dangerous lot. We get them in Malaysia too.The message of unity through the ONE Malaysia concept will be a far cry if this is not checked. But people being people, whoever they are, are human beings and we are masters of cloaking ourselves in what we are not. We live in myths, advocate denials and even ingenuously revoke the very principles of justice that keep us as a people. To put it simply, we make laws and we break them. A right can be wrong and a wrong is sometimes right. If this is what makes politics so interesting, certainly politicians cannot be spared from being called "liars". Anyway, we know that not all are and that's the irony of it all!

In a free society, you should not be stopped from speaking your minds on how your government is being run. It is your right. But rights too have their limits and limits are dictated by who are in power. Raja Petra Kamaruddin went beyond the boundaries in speaking up to what he believed were the truth and ended up in muddy waters. Now he is a wanted man. He disappeared from sight, only his blog remains.
Do not let this one unhealthy incident fooled you from expressing your views and opinions. Keep away from what you know are half truths, lies and the like. And so be it if anyone were to take you as being negative for upholding the truth. That's your right of choice to right the wrong!

Survival of Democracy

Democracy is the one man's vote for freedom. It has survived and it has indeed evolved into some unruly versions over the last two decades or so. In Malaysia, it is alive and well, colourful and tainted with an Islamic touch.
Democracy comes in many facets, abused and dictated by groups and organizations, camouflaged by ideas and cloaked in disguise. It is winning the world and has survived. Regardless of how extreme it may be, nations like Israel and Iran are practicing democracy in their own ways and rights.
Britain has a throne in the monarchy, the President rules in the US with veto powers and countries like Pakistan and Singapore have both a President and a Prime Minister. If democracy rings the bell of freedom for many the world over, let us be reminded that it will never be futile therefore to fight for its purity.

Thieves are out to steal. Only a handful steal for food, out of hunger. But all are up to no good. In Kuala Lumpur, thieves are a menace to society. Besides robbing you in your own homes, they also carry out their trade as pedestrians, lurking at back lanes and side walks, ready to pounce their victims every time an opportunity arises. Many would snatch and run, more often than not, into the crowd. Many too would depend on their motorbikes to make the run into the traffic. These bikers, now known as "road samseng" choose their targets well, their preference are ladies and mothers.
Have you ever thought what drives a person to steal? Money, yes. Fun, no. To the thief, stealing is an easy way to get money but with a very high risk. This is known to them. Thieves are much cleverer than what you think they are not. It is an art.They even lurk in the internet, the best cover for disguise.
I will reserve my thoughts on commercial thieves and thieves manipulating the system, robbing you and me out of our hard earned cash. Don't ever be one!

Anger and frustration

Anger is not about the mind but our feelings controlling our thoughts. People vent their anger because they cannot control their thoughts, fear engulfed their brains and their thoughts become negative. To the angry person, all things negative are "good". Whilst anger is completely normal, it can get out of control and turn destructive. This is when rage and fury takes over.
It is instinctive of humans to express anger with aggressiveness. Being aggressive is downright unhealthy when we become physically abusive. It can happen anywhere, at home, in the office or even in parliament. It would be good that Malaysians are given simple basic training on how to control anger. We can begin with the schools, as a head start.
All it needs are 3 basic approaches and that is, expressing, suppressing and calming. Yes, anger can be suppressed, redirected and converted into constructive behaviour. People who easily become angry have a low tolerance of frustration. Family values and respect at an early age can go a long way to help Malaysians become a more pleasant people with high values for one another.

"I don't trust the law anymore in Malaysia". I was in a coffee shop this evening and overheard the next table talking, not that I want to eavesdrop, but that was their point of discussion. There they were, citizens of our country, discussing about our judicial system, judges taking sides and the system politically manipulated. Such negative outbursts are the nucleus of the atom. Setting the negatively charged electrons to vibrate will ionised the molecules. In our body, the effect is disastrous. Humans are diseased from this simple basic phenomena. It's unwise to write-off the coffee shop talk.

George W.Bush was wrong with more troops in Iraq, thoughts collide in society and chemicals can do havoc to your body systems. Barricaded in your house...feeling unsafe

Security seems to be catching up with the richer of the rich in Malaysia. They fenced themselves up, alarm system and surveillance cameras are all in place and positioned at strategic locations in the garden and around the house. The very rich have guards and dogs to make up the force. Miri is no exception as more and more of those feeling unsafe look for security at home. I have none of those. My home is simple and my gates unlocked at night. I use simple lights to make the place look bright. Inside, I have the Lord to look after us.

People are not above the law and no police officers are above the law. In the recent Perak fiasco, they broke the law by entering the house and manhandling the elected representatives who did not commit any crimes. No arguments about that. The media were there and those clips in Yahoo have by now been viewed the world over. So what is there to hide? Whatever denials one makes, those pictures are real happenings and no amount of defense by those in government can erase the fact that the police were there in the house mingling with the legislators, trying to enforce law and order in the wrong place. There are times when mistakes are made and must be admitted. Let's be fair to ourselves.

Dissatisfaction can GROW

Dissatisfaction amongst people are behind the many issues besetting governments the world over. Security issues, social issues, economic issues and of course political issues are not new challenges at all. Leaders will only have to calm the storms with tact and skills. Strategies must fall into place and ideas from all strata of society must be respected. Some countries not practicing democracy adopt other ways rather than listening to their society to solve their problems. And that has led to catastrophic situation. History has the record.
From a proven establishment in the US to the volatile Korean scenario, governments are chosen by the people, good governance is the keyword for progress. Good governance means upholding values. When ethical values erode amongst leaders or when greed engulf the system, we are faced with people becoming dissatisfied and dissatisfaction can GROW. Make no mistake about that.
At home here in Malaysia, I do not see that we have any threat to our security but security is made an issue with the Internal Security Act, somewhat 'abused' in the recent past. Social issues are rare, religious issues almost nil in Malaysia but what is very much disturbing now is the increasing political issues, the PERAK case being a classic example, the speck is already in the eye. This must not be denied by any quarters, please. Doing so will tantamount to sweeping such issues under the carpet.
The 1Malaysia concept, tough as it may sound, has been implemented by our Prime Minister in an effort to bring people of all races together. For it to work, it must first be understood and respected which is the difficult part. And hastily too, our PM has introduced the KPI, not a new thing administratively, the impact is more on sending a clear message to everyone in the system to buckle up or get thrown out.
Threats are always abound in any society and Malaysia is not an exception to this norm. If threats are anything to go by leading on to issues to be solved, it is imperative that leaders remain calm. HOW they solve it is MOST important. And a problem is certainly not solved when systems are manipulated thus creating more dissatisfaction. Think about it!

Food in Malaysia

Food is cheap in Malaysia if compared to Singapore, Australia and other countries. It's too bad if you disagree with me because with RM 2.50, I can get a bowl of noodles in Miri while I have to fork out 10 times that in Australia, for nearly the same thing. In Sarawak, a well balanced Nasi Lemak is RM 5.00 or cheaper, a price you cannot dream to get in Singapore. But of course, where you stop to savor your appetite also matters, it could just be a side street food stall serving hot curry rice and Nasi Ayam or one of those coffee restaurant eateries where all you need to do is choose on what to eat, Malaysia has it all. From French cuisine in posh surroundings to the meekness of the Indian Roti Canai, name it, we have it. Your choice of the food court or stopping where you prefer, if the surrounding is clean and the preparation tasty, your meal will always be worth your money. This is Malaysia, a food haven for all to enjoy. So,complaining of not enough food here and prices high are rubbish! Ask any tourist and they will tell you, Food in Malaysia, No.1. wow!

A learned Malaysian Chinese gentleman was recently arrested and released for introducing the 1BLACKMalaysia. Black which symbolically implies mourning, sooty, sinister, sleek and deadly is the ‘venom’. Of course there’s no harm in wearing black clothing but wearing black towards a cause, significantly as a sign of protest will create harm. It has created harm. No doubt about that. This is a passive response or shall I say a passive resistance, his game plan was clearly, as I see it, to uphold democracy and the freedom of speech. The rationale to sit passively, vigil like, is Gandhian in nature, the non aggressive stance has but one clear objective and that is, to protest. That’s the motive, to protest. The norm with individuals is, they will only protest out of frustration. Protests in whatever form can turn ugly because people, being human beings can become aggressive when faced with failure to attain their goals.
